Are the Narrations Indicating Support for Yamani Mutawatir?
Dar al-Hedayah | To prove their belief in the obligation to obey the “Yamani,” the faction of the claimant Yamani has made another claim, stating that the narrations indicating support and companionship with the Yamani are mutawatir (mass-transmitted, recurrent). Therefore, they argue, there is no need for chain (sanad) examination, and their content is acceptable.
In this article, we critique the claim of the tawatur (recurrent transmission) of narrations regarding supporting the Yamani.
🔍 The Claim of Tawatur for Yamani Narrations
Ahmad al-Basri makes a strange statement:
“The narrations that indicate supporting the Yamani, pledging allegiance (bay’ah) to him, following him, and that those who refrain from pledging allegiance to him are people of the Fire are numerous and strong.“
*Nasihat ila Talabat al-Hawzat al-‘Ilmiyyah wa ila Kull man Yatlub al-Haqq, P. 27*
It is obvious that there is no narration on this matter, except for a single weak narration in which supporting the Yamanii is mentioned as a recommended act (mustahabb). Regarding the obligation (wujub) of pledging allegiance to the Yamani and that not pledging allegiance to him equals going to Hell, no narration exists with such content. It is unclear which numerous and strong narrations Ahmad al-Basri is talking about.
Ahmad al-Basri, in another place, while explaining the hadith on “preserving one’s life for Imam al-Zaman (as),” says:
“This hadith indicates that staying put and preserving one’s life until the emergence of Imam al-Mahdi (as) from Mecca takes precedence over joining the banner of the Yamani. After it became clear from previous arguments the worthlessness of this theory and the emptiness of the thinking of one who proposes such theories, we ask a question: Should people obey you (the author of the book) or the Imams (as)? The Imams (as) command people to hasten to the Yamani and support him, and you command people not to support the Yamani and not to follow him, and you say that this statement of Imam al-Baqir (as)—‘I preserve my life for the companion of the affair (Sahib al-Amr)’—indicates that the Yamani should not be supported. Even though this narration is mutashabih (having apparent ambiguity) and does not in any way indicate guiding people to desist from supporting the Yamani; rather, what the hadith indicates is preserving life until the movement of the Imam (as) begins, and the movement of the Imam (as) begins with the Yamani. So why are you perplexed, and where are you going?”

🤔 Response
His statement that “the Imams (as) commanded people to support the Yamanii” is a falsehood and an act of lying against the Ahl al-Bayt (as). This is because no narration indicates the obligation of supporting the Yamanii. We have also explained the lack of authority (hujjiyyah) of the narration upon which Ahmad al-Basri relies.
