The Mahdiyyīn Are the Same as the Imams (peace be upon them)
The Mahdiyyīn Are the Same as the Twelve Imams
Dar al‑Hidayah | Twelve Imams In the body of Shia narrations, there are many hadith indicating that the Imams of the Shia are themselves the Mahdiyyīn of the Ummah. In this article, we will mention some of these narrations.
First Narration
Allah revealed to me:
“O Muhammad… and I have granted you that from the loins of ʿAlī, eleven Mahdīs will come forth — all of them from your progeny through the pure virgin (Fāṭimah) — and the last of them will be the one before whom ʿĪsā ibn Maryam will pray. He will fill the earth with justice just as it had been filled with oppression and injustice.” (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 1, pp. 250–251, ḥadīth 1)
Second Narration
“I and my successors from among my children are all Mahdī and recipients of divine inspiration (muḥaddath).” I asked: “O Amīr al‑Muʾminīn, who are they?” He replied: “Al‑Ḥasan, al‑Ḥusayn, then my son ʿAlī ibn al‑Ḥusayn — and at that time ʿAlī was still an infant — then eight after him.” (Biṣār al‑Darajāt, p. 372, ḥadīth 15)
Third Narration
“My successors are eleven from my children, all of them are guiding Mahdiyyīn.” (Kitāb Sulaym, vol. 2, p. 824)
Fourth Narration — from Imām al‑Ḥusayn (peace be upon him)
“From us there are twelve Mahdīs. The first of them is Amīr al‑Muʾminīn, and the last of them is my ninth descendant. He is the Qāʾim with the truth. Allah will revive the earth through him after its death, will make the religion of truth prevail over all religions, and will support him even if the polytheists dislike it. He will have an occultation…” (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 1, p. 317, ḥadīth 3)
Fifth Narration
“From the progeny of Imām Mūsā al‑Kāẓim, Allah will bring forth the remainder of the twelve Imams — the Mahdīs — Imams whom Allah has made special to Himself, granting them a place in His sacred realm. Whoever awaits the twelfth of them is like one who stands before the Prophet with sword in hand, defending him.” (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 2, pp. 334–335, ḥadīth 5; p. 647, ḥadīth 8)
Sixth Narration
“We are twelve Mahdīs.” (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 2, p. 335, ḥadīth 6)
Seventh Narration
“For this Ummah there are twelve Imams who are guides and Mahdīs, whom the humiliation of those who wish to humiliate them will not harm.” (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 1, p. 298, ḥadīth 5)
Eighth Narration — from a supplication
“O Allah, send Your mercy and blessings upon Muhammad and his family — the Imams who are guiding Mahdiyyīn — those who are truthful scholars, righteous and pious, pillars of Your religion, foundations of Your oneness, interpreters of Your revelation, Your proofs over Your creation, and Your vicegerents on Your earth. Those whom You have chosen for Yourself, selected over Your servants, and with whom You are pleased for the propagation of Your religion…” (al‑Ghaybah by al‑Ṭūsī, p. 279)
Ninth Narration
“ʿAlī is the best one I leave as my successor; he is the Imam and Caliph after me, as are my two grandsons, and nine Imams from the loins of al‑Ḥusayn — all of them righteous Imams. If you follow them, you will find them to be guides and Mahdīs.” (Kifāyat al‑Athar, p. 199)
Tenth Narration — from Imām al‑Ṣādiq (peace be upon him)
“From us there are twelve Mahdīs — six of them have passed, and six remain. Allah will do with the sixth of them whatever He wills.” (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 2, p. 338, ḥadīth 13)
Conclusion
These narrations clearly indicate that the Mahdiyyīn mentioned in the hadith are none other than the Twelve Imamss (peace be upon them).
The Twelve Proofs of Allah
Numerous narrations clearly state that the number of Allah’s proofs (ḥujaj) is twelve — and that these narrations restrict this number exclusively to those twelve.
Thus, we understand that the Mahdi of this Ummah refers to the Twelve Imams.
Interpreting the “Mahdiyyīn” Narrations
According to explanations that will follow, narrations about “Mahdiyyīn” after the Qāʾim (Imam al‑Mahdi, peace be upon him) are interpreted as referring to the Imams who will return during the Rajʿa (Return).
If it were hypothetically proven that there are Mahdiyyīn other than the Twelve Imams, they would have no divine position — as explicitly stated in the narration of Abū Baṣīr. (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 2, p. 358, ḥadīth 56)
Conclusion
The title Mahdi is inseparable from the concept of Imam and divinely appointed guide. Authentic narrations confirm that the Mahdi refers exclusively to the Twelve Imams, and any claim beyond this is either weak, fabricated, or misinterpreted.
