The Term “Mahdi” and Its Meaning

Dar al‑Hidayah | The term Mahdi is an exclusive description for the Imams of the Muslim community of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and the divinely appointed successors and caliphs of Allah. It appears that this title had no precedent in previous religious communities.

Meaning of “Mahdi”

By Mahdi is meant: a person who has been guided by Allah through a special divine grace, and as a result, has been appointed as a guide for all creation.

Therefore:

• It is impossible for someone to be an Imam and a guide (Hādī) without being a Mahdi who has been guided by Allah.
• Likewise, it is impossible for someone to be a Mahdi without also being an Imam and guide appointed by Allah.

A Rare Narration

Yes — there is a single narration, transmitted exclusively through the Wāqifiyya sect and not mentioned in any other book, which states that Muḥammad ibn al‑Ḥanafiyya, the son of Amīr al‑Muʾminīn ʿAlī (peace be upon him), was a Mahdi but not an Imam. (Al‑Imāmah wa al‑Tabṣirah, p. 60, ḥadīth 47)

This narration not only has no parallel in meaning, but the life of Muḥammad ibn al‑Ḥanafiyya also contradicts it, as there is no record of him holding any position of guidance or high religious or spiritual status.

The Twelve Proofs of Allah

Numerous narrations clearly state that the number of Allah’s proofs (ḥujaj) is twelve — and that these narrations restrict this number exclusively to those twelve.

Thus, we understand that the Mahdi of this Ummah refers to the Twelve Imams.

Interpreting the “Mahdiyyīn” Narrations

According to explanations that will follow, narrations about “Mahdiyyīn” after the Qāʾim (Imam al‑Mahdi, peace be upon him) are interpreted as referring to the Imams who will return during the Rajʿa (Return).

If it were hypothetically proven that there are Mahdiyyīn other than the Twelve Imams, they would have no divine position — as explicitly stated in the narration of Abū Baṣīr. (Kamal al‑Din, vol. 2, p. 358, ḥadīth 56)

The title Mahdi is inseparable from the concept of Imam and divinely appointed guide. Authentic narrations confirm that the Mahdi refers exclusively to the Twelve Imams, and any claim beyond this is either weak, fabricated, or misinterpreted.
