Yamani in Shia Narrations: Identity and Lineage

As previously noted, narrations about the Yamani in Shia narrations are very limited. The traditions from the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) do not provide a clear name or detailed attributes that would allow us to distinguish Yamani from others. Instead, they offer general descriptions, leaving his identity somewhat ambiguous.

The Banner of Guidance

Some narrations describe Yamani’s banner as a banner of guidance, and his uprising as one of the certain signs of Imam Mahdi’s reappearance. However, these narrations do not paint a detailed picture of his personal qualities or background. They emphasize his role as a divinely guided leader, but not his exact identity.

Yamani from the Lineage of Zayd al-Shahid

Other narrations suggest that Yamani is from the descendants of Zayd al-Shahid, a relative of Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq (peace be upon him). For example, Sayyid Ibn Ṭāwūs narrates:

“ʿAbbād ibn Muḥammad al-Madāʾinī said: I entered upon Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq in Medina and asked: ‘My master, when will the Qa’im of the family of Muhammad rise?’ He replied: ‘Whenever God wills.’ I asked: ‘Will there be a sign before his rise?’ He said: ‘Yes, several signs.’ I asked: ‘Like what?’ He said: ‘The emergence of a creature from the East, a banner from the West, a trial covering the people of Baghdad, and the uprising of a man from the descendants of my uncle Zayd in Yemen. And God does what He wills.’”

Conclusion

It is clear that one of the signs of Imam Mahdi’s reappearance mentioned in various narrations is the uprising of Yamani from Yemen. The narration cited above explains that one of the signs is the emergence of a man from Yemen, attributed to the lineage of Zayd al-Shahid. This provides a strong indication that the Yamani mentioned in other narrations is the same figure described here.
