The Testament as a Means of Recognizing the Infallible Imam

Dar al-Hidaya : One of the key ways to recognize the true Infallible Imam and expose the baselessness of false claimants is through the Testament. According to the narrations from the infallible leaders (peace be upon them), the testament is a clear and unequivocal sign of legitimacy. In this article, we explore the importance of the testament in identifying the rightful Imam.

Testament Narrations

Ḥārith ibn Mughīrah al-Naṣrī narrates:
“I asked Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): How is the master of this affair recognized? He replied: ‘By tranquility, dignity, knowledge, and the Testament.’”
(Al-Khiṣāl, Vol. 1, p. 200)

Sulaymān ibn Mihrān narrates from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him):
“Ten characteristics define the Imam: Infallibility, clear designation (naṣṣ) for his Imamate, being the most knowledgeable and God-fearing among people, having the most knowledge of the Book of Allah, and being the possessor of the apparent testament…”
(Al-Khiṣāl, Vol. 2, p. 428)

Clarity of the Testament

In many narrations, it is emphasized that the testament must be so clear that when travelers enter a city and ask about the testament of the previous Imam, the people should immediately know the name of the successor. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) further explains:

“I asked Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): What is the proof against someone who falsely claims the position of Imamate? He replied:
‘There are three proofs, which, if they are not found in a man, he is not the rightful Imam:

  1. He must be the most deserving person in relation to the previous Imam.

  2. He must possess the weapon of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

  3. He must be the possessor of the apparent testament, so that when you enter the city of the Imam and ask the general public and even children, “To whom did such-and-such Imam bequeath his testament?” they will answer, “To such-and-such person.”’”
    (Al-Khiṣāl, Vol. 1, p. 117)

Appointment by the Previous Imam

The appointment of the Imam must be made by clear designations (naṣṣ) from the previous Imam. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said:

“I asked Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him): How is the Imam recognized? He replied:
‘By several characteristics, the first of which is that he must be appointed by clear designation (naṣṣ) from Allah, the Almighty. He must be publicly announced as a leader for the people so that he may serve as a proof upon them. Just as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) appointed Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and introduced him to the people by name and identity, so too must every Imam appoint his successor…’”
(Ma‘ānī al-Akhbār, Vol. 1, p. 101)

The Outcome of the Testament

The narrations emphasize that the testament explicitly states the identity of the next Imam, leaving no room for false claimants. However, Aḥmad Ismā‘īl Ḥambooshī falsely claims to possess this testament, even though he misunderstands its true meaning.

Conclusion

The Testament serves as a clear and undeniable method for recognizing the rightful Imam. The idea of a designated successor, clearly identified by the previous Imam, eliminates any ambiguity and exposes false claimants like Aḥmad Ismā‘īl Ḥambooshī who misinterpret or falsely assert their role. Authenticity and clarity in the testament remain crucial in safeguarding the legitimacy of true Islamic leadership.
